The Kalyaev dynasty is one of the most recognizable names in the world of computing systems

For more than 50 years, the Kalyaev dynasty has been at the forefront of scientific achievements at the Southern Federal University.

In 1954, Anatoly Kalyaev and his wife Angelina, after defending their dissertations at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, moved to Taganrog and began their scientific career at the Taganrog State Radio Engineering University, which later became part of the Southern Federal University. This is how one of the most famous scientific dynasties in the south of Russia was born – the Kalyaev dynasty.

Under the leadership of Anatoly Vasilyevich, the Mius research and development bureau and the Research Institute of Multiprocessor Computing Systems were founded , which to this day are engaged in advanced scientific developments. Anatoly Kalyaev personally trained 17 doctors and 56 candidates of science. And under the leadership and with direct participation, a macroprocessor microelectronic element base for supercomputers, which has no analogues in the world, was developed. The supercomputers themselves, developed at the Research Institute of MVS, were significantly superior in their characteristics to their known world analogues.

The son of Anatoly Kalyaev decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and in 1980, after graduating from TSU, he plunged headlong into computer science. Today Igor Anatolyevichis the scientific director of the SFU department, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation. During his career, he made a number of theoretical discoveries in the field of computing systems and published more than 300 scientific papers.

Also, a representative of the third generation of the scientific dynasty, Anatoly Kalyaev , has been working at SFU for more than 15 years . Anatoly Igorevich is a candidate of technical sciences and the head of laboratories at the Research Institute of MVS, founded by his grandfather. Last year, Anatoly Igorevich was among the winners of the “Science” specialization of the “Leaders of Russia 2020” competition.

“I can’t say that anyone in my family directly influenced my choice of profession, but already as a child I was often brought to our university, where I saw how my relatives and other employees were creating robots, developing computer systems and researching all kinds of algorithms. When you see how interested people do their work, it always motivates, and you also want to participate in this process,” said Anatoly Igorevich Kalyaev .

Along with the development of the computing industry, the scientific interests of the Kalyaev dynasty are deepening. Therefore, Anatoly Igorevich is developing in the field of GRID technologies and cloud computing, and his wife Dina Orda-Zhigulina at the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences is creating monitoring systems and automated data processing.

“Of course, I would like my children to continue the family business, but this is entirely their choice. However, I consider it my duty to give them the opportunity to see how exciting science can be,” shared Anatoly Igorevich Kalyaev.
